Insulin
Pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitors
Insulin pump therapy,
also called continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII), offers the
ability to precisely match insulin delivery to insulin requirements.
Insulin pump therapy is associated with the ability to achieve lower A1c
values, with less hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and less weight gain
than with multiple daily injections of insulin. People who succeed with
insulin pump therapy generally learn how to adjust the insulin pump to
appropriately meet their personal requirements, and are willing to test
blood sugar 4 or more times per day.
Continuous glucose
monitors use new technology to provide continuous, real time monitoring
of glucose levels. Currently, these monitors are not covered by
insurance.
