Curriculum Vitae)
Dr. Fox is trained in
the diagnosis and treatment of hormone disorders. Board
certified in both internal medicine and endocrinology,
he enjoys all areas of endocrinology, but has a
particular interest in thyroid disease (especially
thyroid cancer) and diabetes.
Dr. Fox received his medical degree from the University
of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver in 1995. He
completed his residency in internal medicine at the
University of Utah Medical Center, electing to spend an
extra year as Chief Medical Resident, and spent a year
as a clinical instructor teaching internal medicine. He
then devoted three years to endocrinology training,
completing a fellowship at the University of Virginia
Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Fox has a special
interest in thyroid disease and thyroid cancer. He has
had special training in thyroid ultrasound, which is
performed in the office when indicated. "Having the
ultrasound available in clinic allows the physician
evaluating the patient to collect and interpret detailed
images of the thyroid in real-time, saving time and
expense for patients (who might otherwise have to make a
special trip to radiology then return to the physician's
office)." For my patients with thyroid nodules, we have
the ability to evaluate the patient, check thyroid
ultrasound, and perform a biopsy during the initial
visit." He performs over 100 ultrasound-guided thyroid
biopsies yearly for patients with thyroid nodules.
Dr. Fox also has a
strong interest in diabetes care. "Diabetes is a
complex, usually lifelong condition that has potential
impact in all areas of one's health, while also
affecting one's family, work, and recreational
activities. I enjoy the relationships that develop with
my diabetic patients, sharing in both their successes
and failures. It is currently an exciting time in
diabetes care, as many new medications and new
technology are available, giving much more freedom of
choice for each patient's medical regimen." Dr. Fox has
interest in insulin pump therapy, both for patients with
type 1 diabetes, as well as for those with type 2
diabetes, and he would like to see greater use of
technology, computers, and the internet for care of
patients with diabetes.
"My general practice
philosophy is that of shared decision making. That is, I
believe that each person is best-suited to make health
care choices that are appropriate for his or her
individual circumstances and values. I believe the
physician should assist the patient by guiding
appropriate testing and interpretation of results, and
explaining and recommending options for therapy."
When not caring for patients, Dr. Fox enjoys spending
time with his wife and two young children. He loves
running with his dog Riley and reading fiction. He
enjoys computers and is an amateur programmer,
maintaining the Boulder Endocrinology Associates
website. |
